Do you crave mashed potatoes? Yes? Cottage pie or shepherd’s pie with mashed potato topping is a hearty dish and perfect for the fall. In normal everyday life we would boil and mash potatoes and top our pie but we are following the autoimmune protocol or else eating strictly paleo so no potatoes for us. Sigh. What to do?
The answer is to replace the potatoes with another starchy veg that can be mashed and that isn’t too sweet. This cottage pie recipe calls for my garlicky cheesy cauliflower sauce mashed into white sweet potatoes to cut the sweetness.
The key to the deliciousness of this cottage pie is to add my homemade AIP Worcestershire sauce to the ground meats. I have to say … YUM!
Do you know the difference between a cottage pie and a shepherd’s pie? A cottage pie is made with ground beef while a shepherd’s pie is made with ground lamb. This pie is made with ground beef and ground bison so what do we call it? A paleo pie?
Hearty and delicious “Paleo pie” freezes really well so this recipe may become a favorite on batch cooking day.

Hearty and delicious "paleo pie".

45 minCook Time
1 hr, 20 Total Time
3 pounds white sweet potatoes (boiled and mashed)
2 teaspoons salt (I use Himalayan sea salt)
2/3 cup cheesy cauliflower sauce (see notes for substitution)
1 1/2 - 2 pounds ground meat (I used bison and beef)
2 tablespoons solid fat (I use coconut oil)
1 large onion, diced (1 1/2 cups)
4 stalks celery, diced (1 1/2 cups)
6 medium carrots, diced (2 1/2 cups)
1-2 large cloves garlic, minced
2-3 tablespoons nomato sauce
6 tablespoons homemade AIP Worcestershire sauce
2-3 teaspoons salt
Peel and chop the white sweet potatoes.
Boil in salted water until fork tender.
Drain and let dry slightly.
Add salt and cheesy cauliflower sauce and mix well.
Melt solid fat in a skillet and saute the diced onion, celery and carrots over medium heat until almost tender.
Add the minced garlic and saute slightly (do not let the garlic brown).
Remove from the heat and add the nomato sauce, the Worcestershire sauce and the salt.
Put the sauteed veggies into a large baking dish.
Brown the ground meats in the skillet and add to the baking dish.
Drop the mashed sweet potato topping by spoonfuls on top of the meat and veggie mixture.
Smooth out the topping.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes.
If desired, broil on high until the crust is golden.
Remove from the oven and slice into 12-15 pieces.
1. To substitute for the cheesy cauliflower sauce: omit the sauce and add 1/4 cup nutritional yeast and 1/4 cup coconut milk to the mashed white sweet potatoes. Season with salt.
2. This freezes well and will keep for at least 3 months in the freezer but ... it won't last that long.
